Spam

Postby MikeDead » Mon Mar 10, 2008 9:28 am

Noticed that the boards have been getting a whole lot of spam as of late, might be a good idea for the board admin to switch to email verification before members are allowed to post, tends to cut down on the spam bots.

In the mean time, is there anyway to boot this Sean Digz character/bot?

I like porn as much as the next guy... but I came here to get my hard on for Bosstones. Call it gay, but I don't wanna see naked women having sex when I could be reading/discussing stuff about The Bosstones.
Someone please get rid of this spam shit... please. It's ruining our wonderful MMB discussion board!

I've admin'd a Celtics forum for the past 4 years and we had the exact same problem, once we enabled email verification it nearly eliminated the problem of spam bots.

I apologize for the inconvienence guys. I'm trying to get myself admin rights to fix this issue because the other admin is MIA right now.

I have been in SXSW for the past couple of days so I wasn't able to check the board. Just cleaned up some of the spam.

A couple of issues to get clear:
1. I only have admin panel access to this forum, and I don't have any uploading access to this site to actually install plug-ins.
2. phpBB is inherently very prone to spambots. The software is just not as good as clearing stuff away like paid forum apps like vbulletin.
3. I DO have image captchas and email verification turned on. It's just not effective to the type of bots that crawl onto this board.

To my best knowledge, there is no mass configuration tool of editing/deleting users in phpBB. I could theoretically try to hand-delete every single spambot that's in the userbase, but it would take way too long.

I will send an email about this problem, and to see what I can do about securing this board (getting plugins/extensions).

If you look at the emails that are registering these spam bots Im willing to bet that alot of them are similar like _____@ru.com, things of that nature are usually spam bots. In the admin panel you can ban email extensions.

Actually, most of them are varied, and at least 2/3 of them are from .coms, and even from services like gmail.com and of course I can't widely ban something like that.
